About Us
Where It All Began, Where Are We Now?
The Cactus Collective is a family-run British horticultural business founded in 2020, rooted in a personal journey that began a year earlier as a response to the pressures of university life.
In 2019, founder and CEO Rhys Spry constructed a 15 × 6 ft greenhouse using his engineering background, initially as a creative escape. What began as a small, self-built structure quickly became a defining passion, proving more rewarding than his academic path. After leaving university, Rhys committed fully to the venture, relocating to a larger site and expanding production with a 50 ft polytunnel and a further 16 ft tunnel.
The post-Brexit landscape marked a pivotal turning point. With overseas plant sourcing no longer viable, The Cactus Collective shifted focus entirely to propagation, dedicating a full year to growing from seed and strengthening long-term self-sufficiency. This period laid the foundations for a fully independent, British-grown operation.
In 2022, the business moved into its permanent home, now operating from two commercial glasshouses totalling just under 25,000 square feet. Every plant is grown on site, ensuring quality control, traceability, and a genuinely 100% British-grown offering.
Sustainability sits at the core of the brand. The site operates on 100% renewable energy, utilises harvested rainwater for irrigation, and employs an innovative aquaponics system to produce a natural, organic fertiliser. These systems reduce environmental impact while supporting healthy, resilient plant growth.
The Cactus Collective’s mission is clear: to make horticulture accessible, sustainable, and inspiring, while fostering a deeper connection between people and plants through thoughtful, responsible growing practices.
